Viña Ventisquero Goes Back To Its Roots

The Root: 1 range of wines from leading Chilean producer Viña Ventisquero are all grown on original ungrafted roots - hence the name - which Viña Ventisquero believes gives them a real purity of fruit character.

Thanks to its particular geography and climate, Chile is one of the few grape growing regions still untouched by Phylloxera - which means the original rootstocks have remained.  Viña Ventisquero claims that these ungrafted rootstocks allow for a better flow of nutrients from the roots to the leaves, which in turn makes wines with strong varietal characteristics that are expressive of the terroir.

The 100% Sauvignon Blanc grapes for the Root: 1 Sauvignon Blanc are grown in Viña Ventisquero’s Tapihue vineyard located in Casablanca Valley - a cool-climate region recognised for quality Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir.  Maritime breezes from the Pacific Ocean (located just 15km from the vineyard) and morning fog cool the area, which helps the wine to retain a fresh acidity, while the bright afternoon sunshine allows for a long growing season and therefore slow ripening.  This, combined with sandy clay loam soils, produces fruit with bright tropical flavours.

According to Winemaker Sergio Hormazábal, the 2017 vintage was “…very dry and the temperatures were moderate for Casablanca, so the grapes were healthy and perfectly ripe.”

Once harvested, the grapes underwent a 12-hour cold maceration before fermentation in stainless steel tanks for 30 days, at a temperature between 12°C and 15°C, to ensure a slow and controlled fermentation.  It was then kept on the lees for four months with bâttonage taking place weekly to add richness to the final wine.

The Root: 1 Sauvignon Blanc has bright aromas of citrus and tropical fruit.  On the palate, flavours of lime, pineapple and pear are complemented by herbaceous notes and a smooth minerality.  This fresh and crisp white pairs perfectly with a lemon and garlic roast chicken, pork loin or a mixed green salad.
