Root 1 Carménère 2018: A Classic Carménère Vintage In Colchagua


The Root 1 range of wines from leading Chilean producer Viña Ventisquero are grown on original ungrafted roots, rendered possible by the singularities of Chile’s geography and climate which allow it to remain one of the few grape growing regions unaffected by Phylloxera.


Root 1’s winemaker Angel Marchant takes up the tale: “All five wines in the Root 1 range have strong varietal characteristics that are expressive of their terroir.   We believe this is because the ungrafted rootstock allows for a better flow of nutrients from the soil to the leaves.”

The 85% Carménère and 15% Syrah grapes for this wine come from Viña Ventisquero’s owned El Suspiro vineyard in Peralillo, Colchagua - a region recognised for producing top red wines with a pure varietal character.  Located between the Andes Mountains and the low coastal mountains of the Pacific Ocean, the rocky slopes of sandy, loamy clay soil in these 21-year-old vineyards help maintain moisture during the intense summer heat.  The wines made from the fruit grown here are rich in colour and full in body, yet also balanced thanks to the cooling coastal breezes which help preserve acidity and freshness. 


“The 2018 vintage for our Carmenere was one of the best in the last ten years,” enthuses Angel.  “There was a good balance of temperature and sunlight, and the moderate and mild harvest conditions gave us vibrant grapes with perfect balance.  The wines are fresh, with high aromatic intensity and impressive concentration.  In my opinion, this is a classic vintage for Carmenere in Colchagua Valley.”


On the nose, Root 1 Carménère has ripe aromas of fresh blackberries and warm spice.   A full-bodied, fruit- forward wine, with plum and cherry on the palate, together with a hint of smoke and vanilla notes.  A complementary partner to full flavoured meat or vegetarian dishes, and hard cheeses such as a mature Cheddar.
