Root 1 Carménère 2014:  Firmly Rooted In Character!

The Root 1 range of wines from leading Chilean producer Viña Ventisquero are all grown on original ungrafted roots - hence the name - which Viña Ventisquero believes gives them real purity of fruit character.

The singularities of Chile’s geography and climate mean that it remains one of the few grape growing regions unaffected by Phylloxera.  The five Root 1 wines in the portfolio are made from grapes grown on ungrafted rootstock, which Viña Ventisquero claims allows for a better flow of nutrients from the soil to the leaves, and in the terroir that best allows the varietal character to express itself.

The 85% Carménère and 15% Syrah grapes for this wine come from Viña Ventisquero’s owned El Suspiro vineyard in Peralillo, Colchagua - a region recognised for the quality of its red wine.  Located between the Andes Mountains and the low coastal mountains of the Pacific Ocean, the intense summer heat and dry vineyards produce red wines rich in colour and full in body, while the cooling coastal breezes help preserve acidity and freshness in the fruit.

Head Winemaker Sergio Hormazábal comments on the vintage conditions, “The summer of 2014 was warm and dry, allowing for an early ripening period for the Carménère grapes in the valley.  This, together with the low yield, made for a wine with fruity, sweet spice aromas, and a silky full-bodied palate.”

Harvested in the coolness of night to prevent oxidisation, the grapes undergo an initial 3 day cold maceration followed by a 7 day fermentation with pumpovers 2-3 times a day to extract varietal character and colour.  A further 7-14 day maceration on the skins gives a smooth texture and soft tannins that develop complexity during the ten months’ ageing in American and French oak.

On the nose, Root 1 Carménère has ripe aromas of fresh blackberries, grilled red peppers and warm spice.  A full-bodied, fruit-forward wine, with plum and cherry on the palate, finished off with a hint of smoke.  The smooth tannins and attractive vanilla note finish mean the wine pairs perfectly with barbecued ribs, or even a selection of full-flavoured hard cheeses, including a Vintage Cheddar.
