Press Release

Registration Now Open For The Ruinart Sommelier Challenge UK 2018
Monday 9th April

  • 30 places available at a seminar and tasting competition in London hosted by Ruinart’s Chef de Caves Frédéric Panaïotis, Ronan Sayburn MS & Xavier Rousset MS
  • 1 winner will be awarded a place on a 4 day educational trip to the Champagne region hosted by Frédéric Panaïotis

This year will see 30 selected Sommeliers battle it out for a single coveted place on a comprehensive 4-day educational trip to the Champagne region hosted by Ruinart’s Chef de Caves Frédéric Panaïotis.

The Ruinart Sommelier Challenge (previously known as Ateliers Ruinart) is an international training and mentoring programme committed to supporting Sommelier wine education.  This year’s UK seminar and blind tasting competition will take place on Monday 9th April at 67 Pall Mall.    The aim of this day is to explore some of the more technical aspects of the art of winemaking and to choose the winning Sommelier who will attend an all-expenses paid trip to Champagne at the end of June 2018.  Applications to participate can be made via the Ruinart Sommelier Challenge UK website Ruinart Sommelier Challenge UK  and the successful Sommelier candidates will be selected by the judging panel who will co-host the event:  Frédéric Panaïotis, Ronan Sayburn MS and Xavier Rousset MS

The Ruinart Sommelier Challenge will take place in 11 countries in 2018, with the winners of each Challenge attending the trip - a rare opportunity for top young Sommeliers from around the world to fully experience the region: from an in-depth study of the Champagne terroir, including a visit of CIVC experimental vineyards and focus on sustainability, to Blanc de Blancs blind tastings and visits to Grandes Marques and small growers.

Last year’s UK winner Julia Sewell from The Fat Duck says of her experience: “The Ruinart Sommelier Challenge seminar was reason enough to enter the competition - insightful, informative and engaging.

“The prize visit to Champagne was the most rewarding experience in so many ways.  Unexpectedly, the friendships made were perhaps the most valuable part of the adventure.  I cannot recommend it highly enough!”

Registration is now open and the deadline for receiving entries for the seminar and competition is 26th March.  To enter The Ruinart Sommelier Challenge, please visit Ruinart Sommelier Challenge UK.
