Penfolds Bin 8:  The Quintessential Australian Blend Comes To Waitrose

Who better to introduce Penfolds Bin 8 2013 than current Penfolds winemaker and custodian Peter Gago?

“Bin 8,” he says, “is a deliberate attempt to create a contemporary, accessible Cabernet Shiraz blend - drinking some time prior to the elder statesman, Bin 389 Cabernet Shiraz.  No new oak, no need.”

Bin 8 was first introduced to the Penfolds collection in 2003 in response to increasing interest in the ‘classic’ Aussie Cabernet Shiraz blends.  In keeping with the Penfolds philosophy of multi-region, multi-varietal blending, this wine is produced from 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Shiraz grapes selected from vineyards and growers across Australia:  McLaren Vale, Padthaway, Langhorne Creek, Barossa Valley and Adelaide Hills.

Traditionally, Penfolds’ wines are named after the bin location after bottling, but Bin 8 has been given its number because it spends time (12 months for the 2013 vintage) in older French and American oak previously used for Bins 128, 28 and 389 - with the ‘8’ obviously providing the common thread.

Penfolds says that the 2013 vintage began with a dry South Australian winter reminiscent of 2006, resulting in vines in water deficit at the beginning of spring.  Early budburst was noticeable across many regions and windy conditions during flowering were, in part, responsible for variable fruit set and lower than average yields come vintage.  Warm days were dispersed throughout October, November and in early January - contributing to an early start to the 2013 harvest and a short, condensed vintage.  The dry and warm conditions, coupled with lower than average yields saw both Shiraz and Cabernet develop with strong, structural tannins, great intensity and encouraging flavour.

The Penfolds Bin 8 Cabernet Shiraz 2013 will be available from Waitrose at RRP £19.99 from early March 2016.
