New Veuve Clicquot Cuvée:  Extra Brut Extra Old

Veuve Clicquot has unveiled Extra Brut Extra Old - a new low-dosage, double-aged Cuvée blended exclusively from the Maison’s famed collection of reserve wines, and described by Cellar Master Dominique Demarville as “the quintessence of the Veuve Clicquot House, compounding our key values: heritage and innovation.”

Over the years, Veuve Clicquot has amassed an impressive library of reserve wines - one of the largest in Champagne - with each set aside to ensure Yellow Label’s consistency over time.  Demarville has selected wines he deems to be most representative of the Veuve Clicquot style for Extra Brut Extra Old, and the first release is an assemblage of 47% Pinot Noir, 27% Chardonnay and 26% Meunier from the 1988, 1996, 2006, 2008 and 2010 vintages.

All wines have been aged for a minimum of three years on the lees in vats, with the final Extra Brut Extra Old bottles matured for at least a further three years in the Veuve Clicquot cellars.  The very low dosage of just 3g/l has been made possible by Demarville choosing full-bodied and generous wines for the blend.

From pioneering the technique of riddling to achieve clarity, to creating the first vintage and the first rosé d’assemblage Champagnes, Veuve Clicquot has been at the forefront of innovation ever since its foundation in 1772.

“Veuve Clicquot’s reserve wines selection has long been at the heart of the House’s identity,” comments President Jean-Marc Gallot.  “Extra Brut Extra Old is an exploration of these, born from Dominique Demarville’s desire to isolate the very essence of Yellow Label.  By delving into Veuve Clicquot’s abundant heritage, and assembling six years of its finest reserve wines spanning over three decades, he has singled out the properties that make Yellow Label unique, and arrived at Extra Brut Extra Old: a wine unparalleled in purity of taste, intensity and silkiness.”

Extra Brut Extra Old - Tasting Note From Veuve Clicquot

Intense colour with golden glints and very fine bubbles.  An initial nose is impressive for its intensity and great richness.  On the one hand, there are very ripe stone fruits and yeast fragrances, and on the other, aeration reveals notes of candied citrus fruits with some toasted aromas to complete the overall effect.

On the palate, right from the attack, the wine presents power and smoothness.  The smooth texture, so key to the Veuve Clicquot style, is highlighted through a lighter effervescence, the pressure being only 4.5 bar instead of the usual 6 bar. Later, the wine shows freshness, minerality and purity.  The remarkable finish is very long with a saline, pure character.  The wine’s ability to adapt is impressive, giving a sensation of freshness for an aperitif or depth for a meal.

Madame Clicquot played an instrumental role in establishing and evolving the Champagne industry due to her innovations, audacity and vision. These values have been maintained by generations and today still offer a remarkable experience to VC drinkers, for as her motto states, “there is only one quality, the finest.”
