LGI Picks The Perfect Pair For Summer Soirées

Southern French specialist LGI has found the perfect pair of wines for the summer sun, with the NEW Sous le Soleil Chardonnay and Cabernet Merlot - both now available from Waitrose.

Sous le Soleil du Midi Chardonnay 2015                                              RRP £5.99, Waitrose

To give this wine its rich, well-balanced and fruity style, the LGI winemakers have blended grapes from vineyards on clay and limestone soils in the Languedoc with those from vineyards on silt soils in Gascony - which is also cooler than the Languedoc, giving fresh wines which are higher in acidity. 

After picking, the crop underwent pneumatic pressing in order to extract only the finest first run juice.  Fermentation took place at a low temperature, around 15oC, in stainless steel tanks followed by three months ageing on the fine lees to bring a rich smoothness to the final wine.

On the nose, this summer white has peach and floral aromas, with hazelnut and butter notes and delicious stone fruit flavours on the palate - a perfect partner to hummus, summer salads, light cheeses and even asparagus risotto.

 

Sous le Soleil du Midi Cabernet Merlot 2015                                       RRP £5.99, Waitrose

The 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Merlot grapes for this fruit forward blend were selected from vineyards in Cruzy and Argeliers, in the East Aude near St Chinian, where the climate is Mediterranean and the soils are clay and limestone, with lots of pebbles. 

Grapes were harvested at optimum ripeness, then destemmed and crushed before beginning the maceration process.  Fermentation took place over several weeks, with each varietal fermented separately:  the Merlot then spent four months maturing on its fine lees and, to add complexity, the Cabernet spent four months ageing with French oak staves. 

This Cabernet Merlot blend has ripe flavours of sweet red fruits, raspberry and cherry, but also an undertone of well integrated oak.  The long finish of this red, with a note of coffee pairs it perfectly with lamb chops, barbecued meats or aged cheese.
