Hallgarten cements Zorzal to its Argentinean portfolio

Press Release

Hallgarten cements Zorzal to its Argentinean portfolio

Specialist wine importer Hallgarten Druitt & Novum Wines has added Zorzal Wines - a boutique Argentine winery founded in 2008 by the renowned Michelini brothers - to its Argentinean portfolio.

Winemaking Director Juan Pablo Michelini selects grapes from vineyards in Gualtallary at 1,350 metres above sea level in the foothills of the Tupungato volcano.  Here, a cool breeze from the Andes gives ideal conditions for growing healthy grapes, while the desert climate and soils comprising rocky limestone with chalk-streaked stones leads to fruit with personality and a sense of place, allowing Michelini to indulge his preference for purity of fruit and austerity over oak and exuberance in his wines.

Vinification takes place in gravity-fed winery on four levels.  Here, Juan Pablo and his brother Matias use roll fermenters and egg-shaped vats, perform micro-vinification in casks and have an automatic temperature control system which can be operated remotely from anywhere in the world.

Hallgarten Head of Buying Steve Daniel comments: “The Michelini brothers, alongside Matias Riccitelli with whom we’ve worked for four years, are the hottest young winemaking talent in Argentina and together are making a real impact on the wine industry as a whole.  We are understandably proud of our Argentinean portfolio, and the addition of Zorzal only cements this - the Eggo range in particular will stand out on any of our customers’ wines lists.”

Hallgarten will list the Zorzal Eggo range, whose wines are all vinified in concrete eggs, for the UK Independents and On-Trade and these will be on show at the company’s Annual Portfolio Tastings on Monday 30th and Tuesday 31st January.
