Discover Rioja With El Viaje De Ramón Reserva By Ramón Bilbao

Rioja’s Ramón Bilbao is inviting Consumers to take a first step on a vinous viaje around the wines of its homeland, with a Reserva addition to its range inspired by the adventurous spirit of its eponymous founder.

El Viaje de Ramón Reserva 2014 joins its ‘clarete’ pale, pink Rosado travelling partner on the shelves of Co-op and, in its 50cl bottle, is also perfect for mid-week drinking.

“If you want to discover the wines of Rioja, then Reserva is a great starting point*,” comments Chief Winemaker Rodolfo Bastida, who joined Ramón Bilbao in 1999.  “For this first step, I have deliberately aimed for an approachable style with medium body and soft tannins, but also all the structure and character of the barrel and bottle ageing that is integral to Rioja Reserva’s character.”

RRP £7, Co-op (selected stores nation-wide)

Rodolfo turns to Ramón Bilbao vineyards throughout the Rioja region for this 100% Tempranillo wine.  “We have some quality vineyards at high altitude in Rioja Alta which give grapes with freshness and elegance, and we also have access to some older vines that are perfect for ageing,” he says.  “The key is to look for fruit which is enhanced, not overwhelmed, by its time in barrel.”

After harvesting, the Tempranillo grapes were macerated, with regular pump-overs, for three to five days.  Fermentation took place in stainless steel and at a slightly lower-than-usual 26oC in order to extract soft, velvety tannins.  Ageing was in American oak barriques for 18 months, followed by a further 18 months in barrel.  The result is a wine with typical Tempranillo liquorice and black fruit character, and sweet spice for from barrel ageing.

Buen Viaje!

*Reserva accounts for 22.4% of all Rioja imports to the UK, almost double that of Crianza (DOCa Rioja stats to November 2018)

Editor’s Note

Established in Haro in the heart of Rioja Alta in 1924, Ramón Bilbao today sources grapes from 180-hectares of owned vineyards, with access to a further 900-hectares via long-term grower contracts.  The appointment of Rodolfo Bastida as Head Winemaker in 1999 marked a new era in the company’s history: Rioja born-and-bred, Bastida believes that the grapes he selects should be allowed to speak for themselves in his wines, and not be hidden by over-ageing and over-oaking.  The purchase of a ‘dream parcel’ of vines high in the Yerga mountains gave Bastida and Ramón Bilbao its first vineyard in Rioja Baja, and the first release in 2016 was the Lalomba Rosado.

Ramón Bilbao is currently the best-selling brand (with appellation) in the Spanish On-Trade, and is one of the fastest growing Rioja brands in the Off-Trade (+29%) in its competitive set [Nielsen data].  The producer has been owned by Zamora Company, one of the largest family beverage companies in Spain, since 1999 and is distributed by Enotria&Coe in the UK.
