Boutinot Plants English Sparkling Wine Roots

Press Release

Boutinot Plants English Sparkling Wine Roots

Boutinot is bringing its winemaking experience to English shores for the first time with the purchase of Henners Vineyards in East Sussex - a key Boutinot agency partner since its first vintage release in 2012.

Boutinot began to produce its own wines in France in 1989, with South Africa joining the family in 1994 and Italy in 2003.  Eric Monnin, who himself started out in Champagne and joined Boutinot 12 years ago, today heads up a team of five winemakers around the world and now adds Henners’ winemaking to his repertoire.

“We are a business which is passionate about wine and wants to get under the skin of everywhere we’re working: that’s why we’re making our own wines in France, Italy, South Africa and around the world, and it’s why we’ve jumped at the chance to see what we can do on our own doorstep,” explains Boutinot Managing Director Dennis Whiteley.  “We’ve worked with Larry for over five years, so we know what a perfect fit the Boutinot and Henners philosophies are, and we cannot wait to dig deep into the potential that we know is there for English wine.”

Established by former F1 engineer Lawrence Warr in 2007 in Herstmonceux, just four miles from the coast, Henners has 10 acres of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier vines on sandstone soils at 24 metres above sea level.  The range currently comprises three Traditional Method Cuvées - a Vintage, Vintage Reserve and Rosé NV - which have been available to the UK Off and On-Trades via Boutinot for the last five years.

Established in 1980, Boutinot is today one of the UK’s leading, and longest standing, independent importers and producers of wines for the full spectrum of the Off and On-Trade.  Its comprehensive ‘Made by Boutinot’ portfolio sits alongside and complements the 100-plus agencies that the company is proud to represent.
