Alsace Riesling - A Prince Among Wines

The 15,500 hectare mosaic of vineyards in Alsace is host to a huge range of soils (granite, limestone, volcanic, gneiss, sandstone and marl to name but a few) and grape varieties.  This means the region's wines - renowned the world over for their distinctive aromatics, purity of fruit and food-matching prowess - range from fresh and clean Sylvaners, to spicy and floral Gewurztraminers and smoky Pinot Gris.  The region's mineral and citrusy Rieslings are considered by many to be the finest and most noble of Alsace's wines.

Schlumberger are known as the 'mountain winemakers', as their distinctive vineyards in Guebwiller are arranged in steep mountain slope terraces supported by 35 miles of dry stone walls made from Vosges sandstone.  The winery, dating back to 1810, is the largest privately owned vineyard in Alsace with 140 ha.  Fifty percent of these vineyards can be found in the Grands Crus of Kitterlé, Kessler, Spiegel and Saering.  (Guebwiller is the only location in Alsace with four different Grands Crus.)

Forty seven percent of the grapes for the Alsace Riesling 2011 "Les Princes Abbés" were selected from the Grand Crus Saering and Kessler, and also from the young vineyards of the Grand Cru Kitterlé, with the remaining grapes selected from the lieu-dit of Bollenberg.  The marl, limestone and sandstone soils found in these areas are perfectly suited to Riesling.  The hand-picked grapes are slowly pressed, fermented in wood barrels for up to four months, and then aged on the lees for 6-8 months.

This is an elegant, dry Riesling with notes of spice and citrus on the nose.  Medium-bodied with ginger and lemon peel flavours enhanced by an underlying minerality, this wine will go beautifully with shellfish and fish starters - think salmon with a Riesling sauce, light chicken dishes or fresh goat's cheese.
