A Personalised Present From Penfolds For Pa’s Day

Penfolds has a history of fortified winemaking that goes back over 170 years to Dr Christopher Penfold and the vineyards he established in Magill, South Australia.  By the 1900s, Penfolds was among the leading fortified producers in Australia and is today widely recognised for its Tawny collection.

Father Grand Tawny occupies a middling position in the Penfolds Tawny family, with Winemaker Peter Gago describes it as “the most elegant of the portfolio”.

Each blend of Father Grand (the word ‘Grand’ here signifying that the average age of the wine is 10 years plus) is made from multiple vintages and varieties from vineyards in South Australia, including Grenache, Shiraz, Mataro and Cabernet.   On average each blend of Father Grand Tawny contains around 15 different vintages, ensuring the creation of a consistent Tawny each year.

The individual varietal components from each vintage allocation are aged separately in seasoned old oak casks.  Many of these been used for the maturation of fortified wines for many decades so have been specifically selected for this wine to ensure a consistency of development, character and house Tawny style.  While some of the casks can be over 70 years old, they may have only matured as few as six to eight different components over that time.

A key element of the Father Grand Tawny character is the fortifying spirit added to arrest fermentation.  This is specifically selected by winemaker Peter Gago to contribute to the wine’s finer varietal flavours and structure, while lifting and enhancing the age complexity.  Traditionally sourced between 27 and 85% v/v, of key importance is this spirit’s ability to rapidly and fully integrate into the blend and contribute to its soft round character without any hot or aggressive elements.

Peter Gago recommends drinking Penfolds Father Grand Tawny now, and describes this wine as:  “Arguably the most refined wine in the Penfolds Tawny portfolio, this is full of elegance and power and has a great balance of freshness and complexity.”
