Wolf Blass Black Label 40th Anniversary Tasting

Talented Wolf Blass winemaker Chris Hatcher (whose trophy cabinet doors will no longer shut, following his latest 2016 IWC Red Winemaker of the Year award) came to sunny London town in August to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of Black Label with a group of Press at 67 Pall Mall.

The occasion was marked with a one-off vertical Black Label tasting spanning the last 5 decades - 2 wines per decade - which included the second 1974 vintage Black Label wine, a Jimmy Watson Trophy winner.

VV’S ‘Top Of The Tops’ Terroir Tasting

Viña Ventisquero’s Winemaker, Felipe Tosso, led a group of Sommeliers through what he considers to be the top wines from VV’s top terroirs.  The tasting was in essence a virtual tour of Viña Ventisquero’s owned vineyards; from Tara, produced in tiny quantities in the world’s driest desert, the Atacama; to the well-known Casablanca region; then moving further inland to taste wines from Maipo Andes and also Maipo Coastal.  The finale to the tasting was the premium wines from the unique microclimate of Apalta.  Each wine was selected by Felipe as the truest expression of place and varietal!

Côtes du Rhône Skin Côntact LIVE…. Again

He vowed the 2015 gig was a one-off… but on Thursday 12th May 2016, Richard Hemming MW brought Skin Côntact back to rock the UK wine trade and raise welcome funds for Wine Relief.

ewpr once again brokered an exclusive sponsorship deal for Côtes du Rhone (after all, ‘Think Red Nose Day, Think Côtes du Rhône’), and organised a Press & Trade Tasting before the band took to the stage - this time at a venue with a truly rock ‘n’ roll history: the O2 Academy, Islington.

Band members Richard Hemming MW, Alex Hunt MW (Berkmann Wines), Ben Smith (Concha y Toro) and Matt James (The Bordeaux Cellar) were joined by a stellar line-up of guest singers - including famous faces such as ‘Jolly’ Olly Smith, The Wine Show’s Amelia Singer, Noble Rot’s Mark Andrew and the rootin’ tootin’ ex-Decanter Editor Guy Woodward.  The night was finished on a high note, with a DJ battle between Neal Martin and Noble Rot’s Dan Keeling.

In addition to being the perfect shop window and showcase for Côtes du Rhône wines, and a stomping night out for the UK Wine Trade, around £10,000 was raised for the Comic Relief charity.

Shining A Light On Chardonnay

Ruinart’s Chef de Cave Frédéric Panaïotis was in London recently to host a Chardonnay tasting at Ruinart’s inaugural ‘Lighthouse’.

Widely recognised as a reference for Blanc de Blancs Champagne, Ruinart’s Lighthouse was an exploration, exhibition and celebration of all things Chardonnay - including Hubert Le Gall’s photogenic ‘The Glass Calendar’ sculpture collection.

Fred’s innovative tasting showed Ruinart wines alongside other New and Old World Chardonnays.

Turkey's Kayra Makes Its Mark

What do you get when you blend characterful Californian winemaker Daniel O’Donnell with a forward-thinking Turkish winery, more indigenous varietal wines than you can shake a stick at, and some of the more unexpected (and unexpectedly good) food and wine pairings encountered in recent years?

The Kayra Wines tasting and lunch / dinner at Hakkasan is what.  We’ll let the pictures do the talking.  Oh, and guest Roger Jones (@littlebedwyn): "Possibly one of the best wine tastings I have been to.  @ew_pr promoting #kayrawines @hakkasan_group. Turkish wines are glowing @will_lyons"

Exploring Alsace Through Riesling & Pinot Gris

Alsace: picture postcard perfect villages… 15,500 hectares of vineyards… the Vosges Mountains to one side and the River Rhine on the other…  and around 13 geological formations found in its soils - from granite and gneiss in the foothills of the mountains to loess and alluvial on the valley floor.

All this means a mosaic of terroirs with a huge spectrum of different wine styles.  What better way to explore this than through a free-pour tasting of Alsace Rieslings and Pinot Gris - two grape varieties, and many different taste profiles - and focus tastings led by a true Alsace wines expert?

That’s exactly what members of the UK Press and Trade were able to do when they came to Chandos House on Monday 12th October: over 80 different wines from leading producers in the region, and two Masterclasses led by Alsatian and Master Sommelier, Eric Zwiebel.
